Neonatal Care Unit

California Pacific Medical Center
Neonatal Intensive-Care Unit (NICU)

Millican Jones was retained by CPMC to provide interior design services for this new NICU within an existing hospital. Evidence-based design best practices dictated the need for a special focus on acoustics and lighting for this patient population. Thus, ceiling, wall, and flooring materials were selected to achieve superior noise reductions, and lighting solutions were designed to provide better light-level modulation to reduce negative impact on the neonates' growth and development. Multi-switch lights and different fixture types were incorporated into the design to provide options for many lighting levels, with the goal of decreasing brightness for the babies' developing eyes and as well as not disturbing infant sleep patterns.
