El Camino Hospital's large Surgery Department includes five interventional suites, ten operating rooms (ORs) with one larger cardiac OR, a 28-bed Pre-Op and Short Stay Unit, an 18-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and typical support spaces. Technology permeates this area, from robotic surgery and delivery robots to the latest in 3D-imaging and real-time long-distance collaboration. In interventional suites and ORs, the design was focused on the procedures, equipment, efficiency, safety, and infection control. The Pre-Op, Short Stay, and PACU units were designed to give patients a comfortable, safe, and peaceful environment.
To ease stress for those in the Surgery Waiting Room, a unique array of five end-to-end digital screens presents a 45-minute video art piece, "American Diorama," by Charles Woodman.
